NASA funds ion-powered Aerobots for potential Titan cave exploration [1]
A nine-month Phase 1 grant from NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts will study SPARK, a concept for small spherical flying robots designed to explore Titan’s caves and sinkholes.[1] The Aerobots would use solid-state electrohydrodynamic ion propulsion, although project lead Daniel Drew says their readiness for NASA’s Dragonfly mission remains uncertain.[1]
Titan’s hydrocarbon lakes, seas and rugged karst terrain are difficult for conventional rovers, so maneuverable flying robots could provide a way to investigate scientifically valuable underground environments while minimizing disturbance to hydrocarbon layers.[1]
