How can Washington bar a foreign leader from the UN?

Washington extended visa sanctions against Palestinian officials and accused the PA and PLO of failing peace commitments, “glorifying terrorism” and trying to internationalize the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.[1] The decision follows the denial of visas to 80 Palestinian officials for the 2025 General Assembly.[1] Saudi Arabia has asked France, Pakistan, Egypt and the United Kingdom for air-defence support because its missile interceptors are running low, while US stocks have also dwindled during the war with Iran.[2] The appeal accompanied intensified fighting, including reported Saudi-led strikes in Yemen, Houthi attacks against Saudi targets and Saudi Arabia’s interception of a Houthi drone south of Mecca.[2][8] The vessels made contact in the north Arabian Sea about 220 kilometers east of Oman, with both governments blaming the other side for unsafe or aggressive maneuvering.[5] No major damage was reported, but India said the incident breached a 1991 confidence-building agreement requiring the countries’ naval vessels and submarines to remain at least three nautical miles apart in international waters.[5] The DoJ says the five defendants were connected to Russian Intelligence Services and paid, or attempted to pay, others to target people aligned or perceived to be aligned with Ukraine.[7] The accusations emerged as Washington and Moscow pursue closer relations following President Donald Trump’s return to office in 2025.[7]

Why Yemen’s escalation is exposing an air-defence bottleneck

Saudi Arabia has asked France, Pakistan, Egypt and the United Kingdom for air-defence support because its missile interceptors are running low, while US stocks have also dwindled during the war with Iran.[2] The appeal accompanied intensified fighting, including reported Saudi-led strikes in Yemen, Houthi attacks against Saudi targets and Saudi Arabia’s interception of a Houthi drone south of Mecca.[2][8]

Why it matters

The conflict now combines military escalation, pressure on the Bab al-Mandab maritime route and scarcity in defensive munitions, while the US simultaneously supports Yemen’s internationally recognized government and holds direct talks with Houthi representatives.[2][8]

  • A four-year informal ceasefire began unraveling in July after the Houthis declared a maritime embargo and resumed missile and drone attacks against Saudi targets.[8]
  • Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s government used an emergency UN Security Council meeting to seek stronger action over alleged Houthi pressure on the Bab al-Mandab Strait.[8]
