Thailand wins verification for eliminating endemic rubella

WHO has verified Thailand as having eliminated rubella as a public health problem, making it the seventh country in the WHO South-East Asia Region to achieve rubella elimination.[1] The decision followed review of surveillance, molecular epidemiology, immunization, outbreak-response and programme-performance evidence, plus a field visit in July 2026.[1]

Why it matters

Rubella infection during pregnancy can cause miscarriage, stillbirth or congenital rubella syndrome, so interrupting endemic transmission protects newborns from preventable lifelong birth defects.[1]

Bangladesh measles outbreak approaches 1,000 child deaths

At least 986 children have died in Bangladesh’s measles outbreak since March, while suspected and confirmed cases have exceeded 180,000.[2] The country is recording more than 1,000 suspected cases daily even after launching a mass vaccination campaign.[2]

Three WHO medical-supply warehouses destroyed in Ukraine

Airstrikes destroyed three warehouses used by WHO in different Ukrainian regions over three months, damaging or ruining medical supplies intended for frontline and hard-to-reach areas.[5] The latest attack hit a main warehouse in the Kyiv region on September 3, while assessments of stock losses remained underway and no WHO personnel were harmed.[5]

Pig kidney supports patient for a record 271 days before human transplant

An American patient lived without dialysis for 271 days after receiving a pig kidney, the longest reported dialysis-free survival following pig-to-human kidney transplantation in a living person.[6] Doctors subsequently replaced it with a human kidney, marking the first reported transition from a porcine kidney transplant to a human kidney transplant.[6]
